When was the papal schism

Many attempts were made to end the schism, yet the most promising had led only to the addition at Pisa in of yet another line of claimants to the papal title. The intolerable situation of three rival popes ultimately led, through a complex process of ecclesiastical and secular diplomacy, to the Council of Constance. The council then proceeded to elect a successor, Martin V —31 , the first pope in forty years to be able to command the allegiance of the whole Latin Church.

The achievement of the council was considerable. Not only did it end years of turbulence in the church, but it did so by asserting these historically significant beliefs:. But a strengthened role for councils never wholly disappeared, and, in the wake of the Second Vatican Council — , it has shown unambiguous signs of renewed vitality.

The first and foremost cause of Schism was the violent temper and reformist attitude of Gregory XI who was elected the pope in Another reason of the Schism of was that the ascendancy of Gregory XI to papacy was seen as growing influence of the French which made many cardinals and other people uncomfortable. The Schism of had its short term effects but did not have any major consequences in the longer term. In the short term, it split the Church into various factions with multiple popes claiming their authority.
