When is medical internship

Residencies allow doctors to become specialists, such as pediatricians, gynecologists, surgeons, oncologists, endocrinologists, allergists and dermatologists. In some cases, interns begin working in their specialty areas and are known as first-year residents. After completing a residency, which can take two to seven years depending on the specialty, doctors are recognized as specialists. Interns perform many of the same duties as doctors, including taking patient histories, examining patients, meeting with family members, and conducting medical procedures such as biopsies, catheterizations and intubations.

Because interns are not licensed doctors, they must perform much of their work with a licensed doctor present or another qualified medical supervisor. Interns go through different phases of training, known as rotations. In addition, interns can select specific specialty areas to finish out their intern periods.
