Accessed November 14, Male tennis players with the most Grand Slam tournament titles won as of September The trio have been the dominant forces for well over a decade, and it remains a hotly-debated topic when it comes to deciding which one of them is the greatest of their era, if not of all time, given they each hold various records.

At 39, Federer is the elder statesman, and with 20 major titles he has also reached the most grand slam finals, semi-finals and quarter-finals of any male player in the Open Era. Last year, year-old Nadal pulled level with Federer on 20 grand slams when winning the French Open once more.

It was his 13 th title at Roland Garros, and no player has been as dominant at one major event as the Spaniard has in Paris. Djokovic then made it 18 by beating Daniil Medvedev in the Australian Open final early in and then got one over on Nadal, beating him in the semi-finals at Roland Garros before going on to seal title No 19 against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.

And Djokovic, 34, could well have age on his side in the pursuit to hold the most grand slam titles come the end of his career, particularly as he levelled his old rivals with a sixth Wimbledon title in July — a victory which also gives him a shout of completing the calendar-year Golden Slam.

By the time Djokovic won his first grand slam title in , at the Australian Open, Federer already had 12 to his name and Nadal three. Regular triumphs for Nadal in France and Djokovic in Australia helped them both tick the scoreboard over nicely, but Federer stalled on 17 after his Wimbledon win, for it would be five years before he won another grand slam at the Australian Open.

Along with Serena Williams, Federer has helped redefine the age in which top players are typically expected to retire, and despite going on to win his 20 th slam at the Australian Open in he has not given up hope of adding to his tally.
